This Incredible Animation Demonstrates How Organs Change During Pregnancy

A woman’s body goes through major changes throughout the first 40 weeks of pregnancy.

The foetus takes up more and more space inside the mother as it grows. This is the origin of the noticeable pregnancy bump, but simply expanding outward isn’t enough; her inside organs are also put under a lot of strain, which can be uncomfortable.

That movement can also be quite spectacular to watch. The video below, which was recently tweeted by the UK publication Scienmag, shows those nine months of transformation sped up to just a few seconds.

The animation is part of an ongoing display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago that depicts the “effect of a pregnancy on a mother’s body as she adjusts physically and mentally to the changes inside her.”

On the museum’s website, you can engage with an interactive slider that depicts what happens throughout pregnancy. They notice organs being compressed from weeks 29 through 32, for example.

A slower version of the interaction, beginning around the beginning of pregnancy and progressing through birth, can be seen in the YouTube video below.
